Tom
My name is Tom O’Brien. I’m from Limerick in the south west of Ireland although I spent 6 years living and working on the west coast near Galway city. I have been involved in the outdoor industry for nearly Eight years now, teaching kayaking, rock climbing, hiking, zip wire, wake boarding and bungee jumping. I have worked with all sorts of groups of different nationalities and backgrounds, adults and kids. In 2009 I decided that I would return to university and study sports studies with physical education and French. This is a four year course of which I have finished two years. At the end of the course I will be qualified to teach physical education and French to students up to the age of 18. My love of the outdoors started at a young age when we would visit various camps with our school although I didn’t realize the opportunities for working in this industry until later. Growing up I played rugby for both my local club and my school team and I also played hurling and Gaelic football- two national sports. I love all sports and traveling so working in Vermont last summer 2010 and again this summer 2011 is the perfect combination for me. I had a great summer in 2010 and that I got to meet lots of cool people and teach some awesome students. A few years ago I got interested in kayaking and as a result of this interest I got a job teaching it to kids. From this interest and through work I started to rock climb hike and mountain bike. I went on to get qualified (certified) in the above activities so that I could teach all of them.
